On 15th June 2009, THA, Green Island Foundation and Ko Samui Municipality had the grand opening of the Low Carbon School Project at Ko Samui School. There were over 500 attendees including Koh Samui Municipality staff, THA members, teachers and students from the 28 schools on Ko Samui and also 39 village leaders.
The aim of the low carbon school project is to make the children of Ko Samui aware of the environmental issues on the island by educating them in rubbish separation, turning citrus fruit peel in to cleaning products, and left over vegetables in to in to waste water treatment solution. They are also educated in how to make herb fermentation biological pesticides, fertilizer from left over food and leaves, setting-up an organic garden to use for school meals and also encouraged to collect and save their milk cartons which can be recycled and made in to a ‘Green Board’ product which can be used for making school furniture.
